Today I'm sharing some portraits from a recent session with Sarah, held down at Queenscliff Beach at sunset. Sarah's a family friend - we've known each other forever as our parents were all friends before we were born!
This session was special for a number of reasons:
- It was the first time I got to test-drive my new camera and lens, and
- The subject of the portraits was my little (big) brother, Steve!
Steve was the person of all my family who I noticed the biggest change in after 3 years away. He'd gone from a boy to a man, he'd filled out and he just seemed... different. Relaxed, comfortable and totally at ease in his skin. When I first saw him the day I got back, I couldn't stop looking at him in disbelief thinking, 'Is that really my little brother?!' - it was so funny! I still see him as a 12-year-old.
On the camera side of things, I recently decided it was time to order a new one to signify my commitment to photography and to help take my work to the next level. I'd been thinking and dreaming about upgrading for nearly a year, and it finally felt like the right time.
I learned photography using a Nikon D7000, a great crop-sensor camera that served me really well and I was fortunate to use. However, it had some limitations that were starting to - I felt - limit my work and the goals I had for where I wanted it to go creatively.
I've always been more drawn to the Canon colouring system and knew that when the time came to upgrade my gear from a crop-sensor camera to full-frame, it would definitely involve a switch from Nikon to Canon.
So last week, my new full-frame Canon 5d Mark IV, and 24-70mm 2.8 lens arrived - my pride and joy! - and I've been like a kid at Christmas. Up until the weekend, I'd been flat out with meetings and catch-ups, and the only opportunities to take photos had been of my dog Ruby, and some still life images in my home.
When Steve mentioned he was coming down to Sydney from Newcastle for the night before his friend's engagement party, I asked if he'd be keen to take some portraits at the beach. I've been keen to showcase more men in my work, and I wanted some portraits to include in my portfolio that reflect the laidback Sydney lifestyle, which is different to the energy of many of my London portrait sessions.
Steve's a 4th year engineering student and will soon be on the job market when his degree is over, so was happy to have some photos taken that he could use for LinkedIn. While this shoot is more lifestyle-focused than what I'd suggest for LinkedIn headshots, it was fun nonetheless and good practice for him for when he gets to the job-hunting stage and we'll take some formal headshots.
We headed down to North Curl Curl beach, starting up in the bush on the rocky headland (Steve's idea) which was a great location - I loved the depth and colours of the shrubbery in the background! Then we went down the the rocky section of the beach just under the headland, which had a beautiful glow as the sun was just about setting and gave the rocks and sand a luminous glow!
I even managed to get Steve to take a few pics of me to use on Instagram - and I think he enjoyed it so much I don't think he wanted to hand the camera back!
Enjoy browsing my favourites from the session!
I think Steve ROCKED these portraits, what do you think?
If you’re in business, whether you realise it or not, you have (or you are) a brand. But what is a brand? And does branding really matter?
I believe yes, branding does matter, and I’m going to answer these questions and help you understand why and how a strong brand can help you make more money in this episode today.
One of the many delights of running your own business and building your brand is the opportunity to fully express yourself. I love personality and brand archetype tests in business because they are so powerful in helping us to see patterns and create frameworks that will help us show up in a consistent way, and ultimately build a valuable and trustworthy brand. Read this post to find out which tests I recommend you take!
So you're gearing up to book a photoshoot and you're searching for a photographer.
You don’t want any photographer though - this is a shoot for your business! You want to make sure that the person you entrust your vision with is someone who truly ‘gets’ you, who you’ll feel comfortable with and who will help you bring your business to life by capturing your story and your essence.
Last week I was up bright and early to shoot a press event for Silou London's latest collection. Boy was it pretty! Silou is a London-based luxury activewear brand that was established in early 2017. Their pieces are designed in London and constructed in Lithuania using non-toxic materials and mindful manufacturing
Mention the word ‘networking,’ and from behind the introvert-owned computer screens across the internet you’ll feel the collective groan and shudders hurtling right at you through your wifi.
Us introverted folk, we’re not ones for small talk or the idea of meeting new people for personal gain, are we? And because that’s the general rep’ networking’s earned, the idea of swappin’ business cards is enough to make us want to bunker down under our duvet’s in an introverted cocoon for all eternity, amiright?
I know I say this about all my clients, but seriously, when Rachel's enquiry about a personal branding session came through I did a little happy dance and squealed with excitement.
You see, Rachel and I had been connected on Instagram some time ago via a mutual friend, and realised we had a shared love for everything French and the Breton stripe.
Beautiful Kristie, all the way from the USA, hanging out at Westminster bridge.⠀
Kristie's a fine food-and-wine loving success coach who's big mission it is to help others create freedom and fulfillment in their lives. She was over in London on her life coaching course graduation, and we took some portraits while she was here and before she then left to meet her hubby in Paris (my faaaavourite city!).⠀
The minute Lori Rae Tomlinson's email enquiry about personal branding photography landed in my inbox I knew we were going to have loads of fun!
